Zeno of Citium
If there’s one philosopher who laid the groundwork for resilience and rational living, it’s Zeno of Citium. Born in Cyprus around 334 BC, Zeno found his way to Athens after a shipwreck—a twist of fate that led him to philosophy. Studying under the Cynics, Zeno developed his own ideas and eventually founded Stoicism, teaching from the Stoa Poikile, a painted colonnade that gave the school its name. Zeno taught that virtue, reason, and living according to nature are the keys to a good life. His teachings became the foundation for one of the most influential philosophies of the ancient world—and one that still resonates today.
